Is our digital age creating "subjective cognitive memory impairment?"

If you are noticing you are feeling more frazzled and forgetful after a long day at the keyboard--you are!  You especially run the risk of memory loss to the point of seriousness.  Then you come home and go online to your social network and play/talk for hours. You spend hours on your blackberry. You find it hard to get to sleep and may even dream you are typing.  For real.  This is called " subjective cognitive impairment,"  and Dr. David Ballard says we are overloaded with digital information.  CPS Research gives it a dubious medical label "busy lifestyle syndrome."  And to make it worse CPS Research is thinking of making small doses of the alzheimers drug "memantine" to treat the memory loss.  Why not just turn of the computers for periods of the day, or give the social networks a rest?  The idea of treating our bodies with drugs piled on top of drugs is getting serious with 36% of Americans experiencing  chronic work stress (Am. Psychological Association).  An alternative to chronic drug-taking is to give yourself some "down time,"--listen to music and not at a loud decibel level; take a walk at lunch; take your pet for a walk after work, research shows this very effective; take a yoga or meditation class three times a week, and NOT in the workplace; exercise to get the flow of oxygen going;; massage also gets the oxygen moving.  But beware of drug companies developing drugs to help you stay online!

Alternative Medicine Can Help Depression, ADD

In answer to a question from another list:  Question - Are there any disciplines in natural health that can help for depression and ADD?

There are options to pharmaceuticals that have some dangerous side effects when there are natural things we can do, even when some mental symptoms, especially mild-moderate depression can be helped naturally:

First  a diet low in white sugars, white flour, oils and butters, and fried foods.

Eliminating smoking and alcohol.

Eat a more natural diet of fresh vegetables, wild rices, and fruits plus fish oils can help.

Moderate exercise, most psychiatrists will tell you, will help most of the mild-moderate depressions.  Plus vitamin C to get the oxygen moving.  Go biking...its fun!

For those with seasonal affective disorder or SAD using an Ott light (Google "Ott light") which is a broad spectrum light.  I put mine in the kitchen at eye level because I spend a lot of time there.  Do not use this past 8 p.m. because they can energize you some.

For post-menopausal women it is important to take estrogenic plant products which can be gotten at a good health food store.

Herbs like St. Johns Wort (contained in Sam-e) will lift depression, but adding in lemon balm increases  that help.  So does adding in scullcap, passion flower, or hops.  But all of these are sedating so do not drive or take them during the day. Take them at bedtime or as a tea, at the side of the bed and do not combine all of them.  They are considered medicines.  For gardeners:  lemon balm, scullcap, and St. Johns Wort flowers are wonderful and easy to work with and come back each year.  You can also dry your own rose petals, and grow lavender.  All of which get you outside in the fresh air and in the sun which converts to vitamin D in the body.

Placing lavender oil on a bit of an edge on your pillow will help with sleep and some drops of oil in the bath helps.  The scent of lavender, many think, is very uplifting...but rose oil is very similar.  Burning a lavender candle, or a rose candle can be very uplifting.

Adding in a good Vitamin B complex will help with stress.  Check the formula because some B's contain Biotin in the formulation.

For mild paranoia, memory problems and insomina  Biotin is a help, and is already included in some B formulations.

For most depressions Folic acid will help, and can also show up in some vitamin formulations.

Supplements like magnesium at bedtime help insomina and bunched muscles.

CoQ enzyme 10 assists to move oxygen through the system to the brain and heart.

Instead of Ritalin for children for over 10 years we've used a product called Efalex or EFA Blend.  It contains fish oils and evening primrose oil (pressed from seeds)...some add vitamin F.  It is made by Nature's Way.

Also for children a product called Focus Factor with way too  many vitamins and supplements to list here, but is now carried by Walmart.  It has lots of B's for stress and other supplements for memory.

These are just some ideas.  Depressions can vary depending on each one of us depending on environment, physical chemistry, or as the result of many cardiac drugs, or other pharmaceuticals.  Many of the things I have listed help mild-moderate depression.  If depression is more serious finding a holistic practitioner who will work with a psychiatrist to get "over the bad times" is a good thing to do.  Then you can graduate to a more natural regime.

If one is suicidal talk about it and get professional help or call the suicide prevention center  immediately.

If you are dealing with the elderly, they have different issues and a good geriatric doctor should work with a holistic practitioner.

For many other mental illnesses it is again good to find a holistic practitioner who will work directly with a psychiatrist.  It is important to find the right "fit" in a doctor.  If you find one who does not recommend "talk therapy" with his handing over many prescriptions, look elsewhere.  Or contact the American Psychiatric Association to find someone who will work holistically.  It's beginning to happen more and more as many folks turn to alternatives.

You will notice I did not put in milligrams or grams per day because again its important to work with a holistic practitioner to pick a protocol for you.   Many herbs interfere with pharmaceuticals...a natural health practitioner can work with you on formulations and where there are duplicates, so discuss things in detail and even show him/her what you bought,...keep the receipts to take back duplications.

Do not take everything I mentioned above at onceDo not exercise without an o.k. from your doctor.  Do not combine any of the above with a pharmaceutical, especially St. Johns Wort.  To do so can cause a syndrome called "Serotonin syndrome" which can lead to death.

As Diana has richly pointed out pharmaceuticals are not always beneficial.

When a psychiatrist only throws a prescription across the table, it's time to find another doctor.

Essiac Tea possible cancer preventative - pt. 2

Essiac - part 2
The herbs used in the original essiac formula included:

Sheep sorrel - cancer remedy
Burdock root - blood purifier
Slippery Elm bark - nature's cleanser
Rhubarb root - detoxifier

later on Watercress, Blessed Thistle, Red Clover and Kelp were added in.

Flora, Inc. (the main producer of this formula)uses the second formula; but most herbalists use the original 4, in dried tea form because it makes so much more and is about a third of the cost of the liquid bottle (which is already expensive).  It is sold under the label of Flora Health.
To mix the dried leaves the following will make the best potency:
Supplies:  4 gallon container preferably not metal, glass if you can find one; stainless if
                you can find no other.

               3 gallon pot with lid

12 or more 16 oz bottles, preferably sterilized amber glass

Method:

1.  Mix dry ingredients thoroughly, place in glass container and shake vigorously.
Store is dark, cool place until use.

2.  Bring 2 gallons of sodium free distilled water to a rolling boil in the 4 gallon pot covered.

3.  Stir in 1 cup of herbs.  Replace lid and boil for 10 minutes.

4.  Turn off stove.  Scrape down sides of pot and stir mixture thoroughly.  Replace lid.

5.  Allow pot to remain closed for 12 hours.  Then turn stove to near the highest setting
and bring herbs ALMOST to a boil.  Do not let boil twice.

6.  Turn off stove.  Strain the liquid into the 3 gallon pot.  Clean the 4 gallon pot and the
strainer.  Then strain the filtered liquid back into the 4 gallon pot.  This is to ensure
     double straining only.

7.  Use a funnel to pour the hot tea into the sterilized bottles immediately.  Tighten cap
to almost tight and after they cool, retighten to where you want them.

8.  Refrigerate.  Since there are no preservatives, if mold develops discard immediately.
This will keep up to 7 days or so.  After that I would rebatch.

Instructions:
Keep refrigerated.
Shake bottle well before using
May be taken cold or warmed NOT in microwave

Dosage:

2 ounces a day, either at bedtime on an empty stomach, or in am l hour before meals, or
2 hours after breakfast.  Since the body assimilates in the evening hours, bedtime is
preferable.  One or two drops in your pet's water (3 cup bowls); less for smaller pets and one drop for ferrets).
To make a paste for use on skin cancers AFTER they have been removed and the site has closed over.  Take a teaspoon of the dried herb and add some drops from the premade tea and form a paste.  Use over site and close over with a large square porous bandage (gauze).  Replace daily for one week and do this monthly.  If you are choosing to do this it should always be supervised by a naturopath (see link below to find one).  For sores on pets make paste only one third strength and apply daily.

Please note the only deaths that have occurred were when this tea was *injected* into the patients.  One had a blood clot on the brain and elected to take it anyway and died, and I think there was another one recently from an injection, but do not know the history of the case.
--------------------------                        CAUTIONS               -------------------------------
This is a powerful cleanser.  If you are on routine pharmaceuticals it can very easily remove them from your body within 48 hours.   Be sure you use this formula ONLY if you are under the care of a natural practitioner or one is in touch with your physician.
DO NOT USE WITH CHILDREN UNDER 18, without extreme supervision.
Do not use until 6 months after chemotherapy has been completed, nor take any cleansing agent until 6 months have passed.
Do not use with any other cleansing routine.
This cleanser can cause diarrhea and if it does so reduce dose immediately.  Many people tell me they begin by taking the treatment twice a week, one cup a day...then go up to three times a week...and then more if the body seems sluggish in it's recovery.

If you are taking it as a preventative you need professional guidance and should seek out a naturopath (see link below).

Essiac Tea possible cancer preventative - pt. 1

Essiac Tea - part 1

With the damaged nuclear reactor meltdown in Japan there may be many cases of cancers and cancer related-problems within our world.  There are natural things to do some of them very basic and dietary, but that's another topic for another night.

I will be updating information on Essiac if it is needed in future posts to this discussion.

While doing my studies in the 80s in natural health I found a wonderful remedy.  It is called Essiac Tea.  It was introduced to a cancer nurse in the 1930's in Canada.  Her name was Renee Cassie and Essiac is her name spelled backwards.  She received the formula fron the Objiwa Indians in Canada and North America.  I was able to find a wonderful hand texted copy of "The Essiac Report" printed in 1946 out of Canada.  Information on this book is in part 2.  Also part 2 will have instructions for mixing the tea from the dried leaves which is much less expensive than buying them from Flora (website in part 2 also).

As I always do I encourage everyone to research anything you put in your body, so here are some links.

Here is the search page for further research:

Side effects and cautions are in part 2 as well as links to find a naturopath, homeopath, or a nutritionist who practices naturally or holistically and knows of Essiac.

Mary has been accepted as a "Registered Naturopath" (RND), from the National Registry of Naturopathic Practitioners, effective March 2011.

Potassium iodide & natural health information

Natural information for nuclear contamination.

It is always a good idea to keep your thyroid in good working condition.  A good homeopath can do that with you as long as you do as he/she says.  (See food recommendations below).

The US Food and Drug Admin recommends taking potassium iodide only when public health officials tell you to do so during a radiation emergency.  In such an emergency radioactive iodine could be released into the air and cause health risks.  Potassium iod'ide' (a form of iod'ine' is quite different than that used to purify water.)  It helps to protect you by preventing the uptake of radioactive iodine into your thyroid.  The thyroid is extremely reactive to even low levels of radioactive iodine.  There are many side effects to taking potassium iodine pills and should only be taken under supervision in your area.

Food recommendations as follows:

Herbs - bayberry, black cohosh, and goldenseal.  Do not take goldenseal for more than 7 days in a row and not if you are allergic to rageed.  If you are concerned a double dose of the bayberry and black cohosh won't hurt.  Follow dosing on the bottles and be sure to check for expiration dates.

Foods - DO include molasses, egg yolks, parsley (and lots of it-it is a cleanser), apricots, dates and prunes.  Eat fish, chicken or raw milk and cheeses for awhile.  Daily parsley tea can be made by pouring just boiled water over a teaspoon of fresh parsley or cilantro and sweetened with a bit of molasses (not white sugar).  Drink three times a day, but not if one is on chemotherapy or other regulating daily drugs.

Do not eat:  brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, or kale (the cruciferous veggies); spinach, turnips, peaches and pears for awhile.  Salads and fresh fruits are best with mountain or spring water (watch the dates on them).

Avoid processed and refined foods, including white flour and sugar.
Do not take sulfa drugs or antihistamines unless specifically directed by your physician.

Avoid fluoride and chlorine as they plus iodine are chemically related.  Chlorine and flouride block iodine receptors in the thyroid gland, resulting in reduced iodine-containing hormone production especially in an under-active thyroid.

Those on thyroid medications, or on complete thyroid replacement (as in hashimoto's syndrome) are better off and should not alter any meds, but do keep your regular testing appointments to check your numbers.
